The Benefits of Spirometry
Among the advantages of this test are the high accuracy of the results, ease of administration, and the complete absence of side effects or pain during the procedure.
Spirometry allows for a precise assessment of respiratory function, which is crucial for diagnosing a number of conditions, such as latent bronchospasm. It is also used to determine the severity of diseases (such as bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, etc.), select the optimal treatment regimen, and analyze the effectiveness of therapy over time.
Description of the procedure and its steps
Spirometry is performed using a spirometer—a device equipped with a sensor that measures the volume of air exhaled from the lungs after a maximum inhalation followed by a maximum exhalation.
To obtain reliable results, proper preparation for the test is necessary. A few hours before the procedure, you should avoid strong tea and coffee, as well as physical exertion. The last meal (a light one) should be eaten no later than 2 hours before the test begins. It is recommended to wear loose-fitting clothing that does not constrict the abdomen or chest.
During the test, the patient sits in a chair, maintaining as straight a posture as possible. The specialist asks the patient to relax and avoid unnecessary movements, as these can lead to distorted results.
A disposable mouthpiece is attached to the device, after which the specialist explains which types of breathing will be measured and how to breathe (calm and deep breathing, as well as forced inhalation and exhalation).
Next, the specialist starts the program and gives the patient instructions on how to breathe. The program is tailored to the specific goals of the test.
At the end of the procedure, the specialist analyzes the data and draws conclusions.
